Weekly Wednesday Update - 10/11/23

Hello! It’s Kelly! It’s my first time being in charge of the Wednesday update on the blog, and as always it was another crazy couple of weeks. After Moira got through her ear infection, the revolving door of respiratory illnesses continued with Caroline coming down with something and most likely passing it to Andrew. We had a really busy and fun weekend, doing lots of fall activities like picking pumpkins and doing a trick or treat event at a local park. On Monday morning, which just happened to be Andrew’s birthday, Andrew had a CT scan. His birthday treat was the oral contrast, yum. He had been feeling fine all morning, but after lunch he was feeling pretty tired and took a nap. However, after he woke up he had a high fever, which only continued to climb. In the evening we decided to head to the ER to get it checked out. All in all the ER wasn’t bad, they gave us a separate waiting area because Andrew is immunocompromised and ran a bunch of tests. We couldn’t find anything specific that was wrong, his white blood cell count was elevated which was both good and bad. It meant he had an infection somewhere, but his body was mounting a response, which was good. Most importantly he wasn’t neutropenic, which is what we were afraid of. So, they concluded it was most likely something viral and sent us home about 5 in the morning.

We had a weird rest of the week trying to recover from the ER visit. Andrew still got chemo on Wednesday, but his oncologist dialed back the chemo a bit to let Andrew recover from whatever took him to the ER. His CT scan was stable without any real change, which was good news. Switching his chemo regimen around a few weeks ago, we were worried this new drug would not keep the cancer under control, but so far it seems to be working well without as many side effects. We continue to wait on living donor candidates. It’s really hard being in the dark on all those updates, but we are trying our best to be patient. And unfortunately we have not had any more deceased donor offers the last couple of weeks.

Hopefully we will have more updates for you next week! Until then, Happy Birthday Andrew, your girls love you so much!!
